| It was an emotional day when John Worrell and Bev Hadgraft arrived back at Sydney Harbour Kayaks at the Spit on the morning of February 12.
After 4,500 km kayaking and cycling round New South Wales, John and Bev were exhausted, but happy that they had reached their target and accomplished what they had set out to do.
John's wife, Suzie, had died of ovarian cancer, and John had become her carer during the last three years of her life. When Suzie died, John decided he wanted to do something to make more women aware of ovarian cancer, and at the same time, raise funds for the GO Fund to find a blood test so that women could be screened.
John and Bev set out on 29 October 2003 and kayaked up the coast of New South Wales. It was while John was kayaking with huge ocean waves pounding him, that a shark suddenly popped up in front of him. |
"That's what cancer is like," John remembers thinking, "It just pops up unpexpectedly, it frightens you, and you have to learn how to deal with it."
While on their trip, John & Bev were interviewed by many newspapers and radios, while That's Life! magazine was also following their trip. They spread the word everywhere they went and now that the trip is over, John feels that he did the right thing by Suzie. In the process he probably saved many lives as well.
Thank you to both John and Bev for your courage and spirit!!
